Norovirus Case History

In recent times lot of things are happening in cruise ships. Some lawsuits filed causing various litigations. Some cases involving rape and murder happening in cruise ship. Some disappearances that had also occurred from cruise ship. Number of cases of Norovirus infections happening in cruise ship is another serious matter of concern. It is a big question now to find whether the cruise ship companies are overzealous to earn extra profit at the cost of public’s interest or all these are media hype.

Evidences show that increasingly more people are suffering from Norovirus infection in cruise ships possibly because people are in close proximity to each other in a confined place, so to say, in a cruise ship and chances of spreading any contagious disease is more.

Another reason the cruise ship is not being disinfected promptly and properly, more so if the cruise ship had an outbreak in the previous trip. Unwashed food and unfiltered water are sources through which Norovirus spreads easily. It also spreads from people to people through homosexuality. Those who also indulge oral and anal sex are not only vulnerable to Norovirus, but potential cases for AIDS and other sexual diseases.

It must be remembered that in all such cruise ships, there is only one doctor with his staff and facility. Now, the same Doctor and facility attends to all the people including the crewmembers. That leaves lot of scope of spread of the disease amongst the people at Doctor’s place itself and it becomes next to impossible for the Doctor to really take any step to improve upon the situation.

But the important point to note that Norovirus infection in cruise ship starts and ends within 24 and 60 hours. And, as reported, most people get full recovery from cruise ship infections. This is nicknamed as Cruise Illness and there are many ways how one can avoid contacting the same.
